A clearer starting point

What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps reduce financial barriers to oral health care for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance and whose adjusted family net income is below $90,000. The CDCP is not a free dental program. It pays eligible providers directly for covered services according to CDCP rules and established fees. Depending on your income, treatment, and the clinic’s fees, you may still need to pay a co-payment or other charges.

Who May Qualify for CDCP?

We focus on the parts of dental care that matter when you are deciding where to book and how to move forward.

You do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage

You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed the required Canadian tax returns.

Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000.

You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Eligibility is determined by the Government of Canada, not by the dental clinic. Requirements and application details may change. Visit Canada.ca/dental for the current rules and to apply or renew.

Understanding CDCP Costs

The plan’s contribution is based on established CDCP fees, not necessarily the clinic’s regular fees.

A 0% co-payment does not always mean no charge. Additional amounts may apply if a service is not covered, clinic fees are higher, limits are reached, or required approval is not obtained.

Dental Services That May Be Covered

The CDCP covers a range of oral health services when eligibility, clinical criteria, frequency limits, and other plan rules are met. Services that may be covered include:

Diagnostic Care

Dental examinations and X-rays.

Preventive Care

Scaling or professional cleaning, polishing, fluoride treatment, and sealants when applicable.

Restorative Care

Tooth-coloured fillings and other eligible restorative services.

Root Canal Treatment

Eligible endodontic services when clinically appropriate.

Dentures

Certain complete and partial removable dentures.

Periodontal Care

Eligible services for gum health, including scaling and root planing.

Oral Surgery

Eligible tooth extractions and other oral surgery services.

Not every service is covered in every situation. Some treatments require preauthorization, supporting documentation, or may be subject to frequency limits. A dental assessment is needed before treatment can be recommended.
